Pope Francis has reminded journalists and world leaders time and time again that the church is for the poor, blasted the global financial system which causes so much poverty in the first place, and called on Catholics across the globe to take action and start lifting up the most vulnerable among them.
In his six days historic visit, Pope Francis makes a statement through his lifestyle. He is the first pope in history to address the United States Congress. After which he heads over to St. Patrick’s Church in Washington D.C. The church along with 70 volunteers arranged a dinner for 300 homeless people.
Under a large tent providing shelter for more than 50 tables covered with white-linen cloth, the pope will bless a menu of boneless teriyaki chicken breast, Asian pasta salad, steamed green beans and carrots, potato rolls, and, for dessert, brownies etc.
“We expect [the pope] to be like a maître d’ at a restaurant,” says Erik Salmi, communications director for the Washington branch of the nonprofit religious group. “There’s not a lot that’s scripted; rather, we want him to have as much time to greet people [and] spend time with them as possible. He’s big with people on the margins of society, those that tend to get overlooked.”
The evening has been arranged in such a way that the most important people in the room are the 300 guests themselves. With good food, music and the company of an international world leader, it will be a night to remember.
Pope Francis is living the Gospel, the words of Jesus are in every action of this man of God: “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in,” – Matthew 25:35.
What Does This Mean For Us?
Let us be imitators of Christ, let us live the gospel of love in our actions. If every Christian just shows more mercy and kindness, the world will turn upside down.
